Summer 2007

Synergy with Berlin
In January 2007, Elodie Lauten was invited to participate in the Sound of Cities Internet project, an interactive collaboration between artists from around the world, initiated and coordinated by Henry Matic, from Berlin; Lauten was chosen to represent New York in this 21st-century collaborative framework where each artist from a different country contributes original music, which is then processed by other artists and finalized into an Mp3 CD sold as a benefit for UNICEF and The International Campaign for Tibet at www.soundofcities.com

Elodie Lauten Interview
In February 2007, Lauten was a guest on the Doc Martin Internet radio show on Tribeca.net. Doc Martin, a.k.a. Martin Russell, PhD, had presented the music of Elodie Lauten in his Avenue B show back in 2005, and he was well-informed to produce an in-depth interview and introduce musical excerpts of such wildly different pieces as the electronic Harmonic Protection Circle, the near-but-not-quite rock opera Waking in New York, and the Baroque-sounding Orfreo.

Woodwinds Premiere
Lauten's ECOCITY for woodwind quintet and percussion was premiered by AFMM luminaries Johnny Reinhard on bassoon and Ron Kozak on oboe at the 2007 American Festival of Microtonal Music. The program included works by Kyle Gann, Joseph Pehrson and Johnny Reinhard. It took place in one of the recently opened downtown hangouts, the Bowery Poetry Club, on May 2, 2007 and was enthusiastically received.

Along with Wendy Carlos...
The American Festival of Microtonal Music label, Pitch, has released a CD entitled ELECTRONICAL, which includes Elodie Lauten's Double X for synthesizer, voice (Lauten's), and bass flute (Andrew Bolotowsky); it is a live recording from the 1999 AFMM festival at NYU. The CD also features works by other artists as seen below.

Orfreo DVD Release on 4Tay
The June 2004 premiere of Orfreo at Merkin Hall is now available on DVD. It is 4Tay's first DVD recording release (Number 0001!) and Lauten's fourth release on this label, following The Deus Ex Machina Cycle (1999) Waking in New York (2003), and Piano Soundtracks (2005). 4Tay recordings are available at: www.classicalcds.net

The DVD features a stellar performance by The Queen's Chamber Band, led by harpsichordist Elaine Comparone and conductor Rudolph Palmer, featuring countertenor Marshall Coid in the title role, soprano Meredith Borden, mezzo-soprano Charlotte Surkin and baritone Peter Castaldi. With librettist Michael Andre, Lauten revisited the mysterious suicide of artist Ray Johnson as a point of departure for this new Orfeo (Orf-Ray-o) archetype, with appropriate strangeness of mood and twice-removed 60s Soho hipness. This exciting documentary was edited and produced by Ludi Askins.
